The VFX-M uses the Number Nine Imagine 128 Series 2 (I128S2) 2D/3D graphics accelerator to provide top-drawer graphics performance. With its 128-bit wide local data bus, the I128S2 can draw sixteen 256-color pixels to your monitor each instruction cycle - twice as many as other graphic accelerators. The VFX-M includes VGA compatible RAMDAC and graphics functions to ease interface with CPUs which expect a VGA controller on start-up. Once the operating system is running, the I128S2’s extended instruction set can then be utilized. The drawing engine can generate more than 610,000 Gouraud-shaded triangles per second. This speed is attained in part because the I128S2 accepts a list of instructions from the CPU, rather than just one at a time. And, while the I128S2 is processing a command from the command queue, it continues to request commands. This means that the I128S2 and the host CPU can process data independently, breaking the lockstep which often reduces system throughput. The I128S2 includes a separate copy engine which can smoothly X/Y scale small RGB or YUV video clips up to full screen at any resolution and any color depth, and maintain a frame rate greater than 30 frames per second. The copy engine can also interpolate the pixels to reduce the effects of the enlargement. The I128S2 controls the video timing, supplying 30 to 150 Hz vertical and 15.7 to 100 KHz horizontal refresh rates. Both interlaced and non-interlaced formats are supported. A programmable clock generator allows the user to set the pixel clock up to 220 MHz. Display formats include 640 x 480, 1024 x 768, 1024 x 1024, 1280 x 1024 and 1600 x 1280. |
